That Old Time Religion

Some of my fondest childhood memories are of hours spent in church, those downhome country ones with plenty of pies for the fellowship dinners, little old ladies who were everyone’s grandmother, and the beginnings of lifelong friendships. And the music! Whether we were “Leaning on the Everlasting Arms” or “Standing on the Promises”, it was sweet! The basses would rumble, the sopranos soar, and the altos and tenor harmonize. This program remembers those days in the Sunday Schools and tent meetings. It explores the songs and the writers who brought them to us: George Bennard with “The Old Rugged Cross”, Thomas Dorsey’s “Precious Lord, Take My Hand” and “Peace in the Valley”, and Albert Brumley and “I’ll Fly Away.” We’ll hit the “Sawdust Trail” with Billy Sunday, and look in on some of those old gospel quartet concerts with the Blackwood Brothers and the Chuck Wagon Gang.
